Who were the "poor" in Jesus’ time? None of us can probably understand a truly poor person, a pauper, a beggar. Imagine being so in lack, that you had to beg. To literally rely on the mercy of others for everything. This is what Jesus meant by "poor in spirit". He wants us to get to the point of recognizing our utter reliance upon God. To be completely stripped of worldliness and self-reliance, destitute enough to beg. Beg God for His Holy Spirit! To fill us, make us rich, to supply all of our spiritual needs, to make us truly wealthy in all that is good.
