// #WEAKER SEX? 1 Peter 3:7 Commentary Sermon #women #men* 16K+ ↓↓   ↓

Peter gives married people some advice in 1 Peter 3. His message in verse 7 has been a controversial one between men and women for generations. Peter's words have been translated as women being called the "weaker sex". Is that what Peter meant? Did Peter mean to demean women? If men could truly comprehend what Peter meant, then they could receive excellent guidance for their interaction with all women. Not only their wife, but mother, sisters, daughters, friends, elders, etc...

"Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered." (1 Peter 3:7 King James Version).

* First off, we start with the King James Version because it's based on what's called the Textus Receptus. The traditional text used by our ancestors, and handed down to us through the original church.

Now, we need to notice that Peter does not say "as the weaker vessel", but rather "as unto the weaker vessel". This means he is not simply calling her a weaker vessel, but rather making a comparison between the woman and the weaker vessel.

What is a "vessel"? Well in the sense of a person, it would be the body, holding the physical self, as well as the soul / spirit, and a temple for Christians to receive the Holy Ghost. But for comparison sake, a vessel is also a piece of pottery. Let's use this in a parable (story) form...

Imagine a pottery collector who has 5 pieces that he is so proud of. This collector has these pieces displayed on stands. He likes to hold them, and study them up close. He loves every single piece. However, one of the vessels is more delicate than the rest (because it is the most beautiful, meaningful and worthful). So when this collector handles this piece, he handles it with extra care. He handles it with extra respect. He handles it with extra love. he does not want to take any chances and mess it up.

Are women really a weaker sex? Maybe some of them are not be able to lift or carry as much weight as some men. Maybe some of them couldn't be as tough as some men. Mabye some of them could not do the same types of jobs and work that some men do. However, maybe women seem to have a stronger threshold of tolerance for pain. Mabye women seem to have a stronger ability to continue on with endurance. Maybe women seem to be more adaptable. They hold life under their care inside of their body for 9 months! They go through the birthing experience! Men can't even cope with the thought of having a human living inside of them, let alone giving birth. Often women run the home, take care of kids, do the cooking, cleaning even while sick themselves? Often women put up with so much from men, and continue to love them?

If men and women both could just stop looking at 1 Peter 3:7 as women being called the "weaker sex", and instead look at it as Peter saying that the woman is extra special, especially when she is your wife. Out of all that you interact with, treat her with extra special care, love and respect. Treat her with as much extra care as you would the most delicate vessel in your pottery collection, because if you break the relationship, you are really going to lose out man!
